Sheffield is situated in South Yorkshire and boasts a long history dating back to pre-Roman times. However, it is best known for its industrial history associated with steel making and in particular the manufacture of cutlery. In fact cutlery has been made in the area since the Middle Ages, and stainless steel was pioneered in the city.
Today the steel making industry has seen a huge decline, as highlighted in one of the most successful British films of all time The Full Monty, which tells the tale of a group of unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who turn to stripping to make their money. Despite such decline, Sheffield steel cutlery is still produced in the area but the city is now reinventing itself into a thriving modern day city once more.
